Description

meh, went through some Sync fanart withdrawal, and ive been a depressive shit lately so i needed this 8V hes a relaxin character to draw for no real reason besides i just plain enjoy drawing him. its a large painting meant to be my new desktop wallpaper and is a remake of a WIP i never finished. the old version was done last December for my old monitor but i got a new one that was like twice the size as the old for Christmas so i dumped the old WIP. the pose and stuff is basically the same but just totally redone to fit the larger monitor ((my old monitor was so TINY compared to this! its hard to imagine how i ever drew anything decent on the old one x_X)). i feel like this painting is under-detailed, though... for some reason idk. maybe im just being too anxious to improve before im ready. i still dont think this is done and i keep tweaking it here and there... adding strokes. so i will go ahead and turn critiques on for this one. its not a personal piece so im not sensitive about this one much P:

this pretty much has the same inspiration as:

both come from one of the Tales of the Abyss novels. i guess i like that Sync spent his early days in the forest as oppose to Daath itself P: painting random trees has become a guilty pleasure of mine. i used to hate painting trees... but now i cant get enough of them so forest backgrounds are never a bad thing.

Sync from Tales of the Abyss
time ~4 days of painting on and off, but feels like it took longer than it should have >.<

DOWNLOAD FOR FULL SIZE. the small view kills the details and makes his clothes some kind of black hole x_X

ok i feel like less of an emo shit now that i have new Sync fanart c:

Before I get into anything else, I want to say that I think you did a fantastic job with this piece.

I've always admired your ability to compose a picture, and like many of your other works, you've created a painting that is wonderfully balanced while placing elements off center to keep it more interesting. Not only is the weight Sync provides well balanced by the denser trees on the right, but the orange (which immediately draws attention as it stands out from all the greens) is well curved to keep the eyes within the painting and not leading them off into oblivion.

The other thing that I immediately noted was how much your human anatomy has improved lately, especially in terms of facial features. Here his face is very balanced and the features are all in perspective. His pose is very dynamic and feels natural- the movement flows smoothly and his clothes are all billowing in the right direction to make everything smooth.

As I'm not a very experienced painter I can't comment very much on your use of strokes, other than I find that you've used them very well. The thinner strokes that you used for Sync blend well with the thicker strokes that you used in the background.

The background is stunning - you've always painted wonderful landscapes and this is no exception. I love the details that you've put into the trees, the leaves and foliage in particular really stand out. Again the composition stands out, with Sync against the sky so that his green hair doesn't get lost in the greens of the forest.

Your use of colour is fantastic, all the tones compliment each other well. The earthy tones suit Sync and the brighter colours really give this picture an energetic feel. It doesn't have the same 'pop-off-the-page' as some of your other paintings do, but skill-wise I'd would rate this among my favorite of your works.

Summary: Fantastic composition makes all other aspects of this picture shine from the stunning background to the dynamic subject. Your paintings seldom fail to impress and this is no exception.
